In the U.S. the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (1971) necessitated the regulation of falconry since the birds are migratory between Canada, U.S., and Mexico. Currently falconry is regulated by the federal government via chapter 50 of the code of federal regulations.
CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement between Governments. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. All imports/exports between member countries must comply with CITES regulations. ALL FALCONIFORMES ARE PROTECTED TO SOME DEGREE UNDER THIS CONVENTION.
